Self-care for Girls with Long Hair
What does self- care mean to you? For me, self-care encompasses—- well for lack of a better word, rituals. Read on more to find out the 5 best self care tips of 2023.
You see, human beings are habitual creatures. Natural philosophy describes our souls as a integral part of the “form” a form which is present in all biological life. Plants, animals, humans… we are all part of the carbon cycle which means that we comprise of dust (or dirt, really means the same thing) and that we ought to return to it, through the process of decay. According to Thomas Aquinas, the theologian philosopher and church father, the soul cannot be without the body but it is also more than the body. It has a spiritual component to it— known as the intellect and the will. He infers that because of that, when we die, our soul still exists without the body.
I know all that can be a little hard to digest for us frazzy haired girlies, but believe me, that’s also essential… to our discussion today.
You see, I was formerly painfully obsessed with how my hair looked. Too flat, too thin. Too bushy, too…. I never ran out of adjectives— mostly derogatory. I was most annoyed with how my hair wouldn’t obey. So my idea of self-care — i.e. caring for my disobedient hair was to obsess about it in the mirror. If you are as disciplined as I am— well that would mean near constant checking.. well I was caring a lot. About my self.
When rituals become unhealthy
Until the day came when I was too tired. I was so tired that even though I had worked all day and night as a junior house officer— that was what they called us because guess what we were always in the house. Never left the hospital. I was so tired…. From not sleeping and working for 36 hours straight… that I was still not too tired to worry about my messy hair.
That was when I got really worried. Self-care was exhausting. Too. At least, my version of self-care then — well one may as well call it an obsession. My hair ritual — was not healthy.
The art of letting go
Then one day I learnt about the art of letting go. Well, not really letting go completely, for one could scarcely imagine… god forbid uncontrollable… unruly… rebellious….
So actually, my revelation was from what my fencing coach said.
He said, that the way you hold your epee— why of course I know how to hold my epee. I have been fencing for over a decade. That’s not the point, sometimes when you are the expert… and in my case I was the expert at preening. That’s when you are allowed, finally to let go. Just a little. Just enough.
You see, the beginners, the novices— they grip on to their weapon until their knuckles are white. It’s necessary, otherwise the weapon may just fall…. With a beat from their opponent. But once you’ve some experience.. and in my case it was a lot— sometimes the stress still got too much and the tightness would in fact greatly hinder your muscles— to the extent that it affects your control.
The same thing with hair, I found. The more you try to control it… the harder it gets… sometimes.
Here are 5 best self-care tips for 2023:
Self-care is not just about taking care of your mental and physical health, it also includes taking care of your hair. Our hair is an important part of our appearance and plays a significant role in our self-esteem and confidence. Neglecting hair care can lead to damage, dryness, and other hair-related problems. Here are some self-care tips to help you achieve healthy and beautiful hair.
Use a deep conditioning treatment

Regular deep conditioning treatments can help to hydrate and repair damaged hair. Look for products that contain natural oils and proteins to nourish and strengthen your hair.
Brush your hair correctly

Brushing your hair correctly is essential for preventing damage and tangles. Start from the ends of your hair and work your way up, gently brushing out any knots or tangles.

Avoid harsh chemicals
Chemical treatments such as dyes, perms, and relaxers can be harsh on your hair and lead to damage. If you do use these treatments, make sure to use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to help protect your hair.
Use a satin or silk pillowcase

Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase can help to reduce friction and prevent hair damage. This is because these materials are gentler on your hair than cotton, which can cause tangles and breakage.
Manage stress

Stress can take a toll on your well-being, so it’s important to find ways to manage it. Practicing gratitude and mindfulness are all effective ways to reduce stress. Acknowledge your achievements, accept your limitations, and don’t beat yourself up over mistakes or setbacks.
In conclusion, taking care of your hair requires a combination of good habits and the right products. Incorporating these self-care tips into your routine can help you achieve healthy, beautiful hair, and boost your self-confidence and self-esteem. Remember, taking care of your hair is an investment in yourself and is worth taking the time to do it right.
